Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem
Founded in 1189, this quaint, cottage-like pub claims to be the oldest in Britain, and it certainly looks it. The low ceilings and small rooms, burrowed into caves, provide an ideal setting for good yarns, session-drinking and ye olde beard- watching. The Trip is definitely one for the ale brigade, even sporting its own brand of ale which, incidentally, is not a bad drop for a home-brewed effort. Be cautious of weekends, where the deluge of tourists can be enough to overwhelm even the most patient of punters.
