The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Rather hardcore, actually.

Review

Itchy was slightly apprehensive about watching a Hollywood remake of what we considered to be a brilliant Swedish original. Don't get us wrong, we love a bit of Daniel Craig and Joely Richardson, but why fix it if it ain't broke, eh?

We had to exercise quite a bit of self control to stop laughing at the ridiculously pimped up title sequence - a cover of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song by a rather high pitched Karen O and Trent Reznor accompanied by some trippy graphics - about as far from the subtleties of the original film as you could get... but once that was over with, we were well and truly sucked into the action.

Based on Stieg Larsson’s successful novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follows investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist as he pieces together a family history in order to obtain insider knowledge to sort out his broken reputation after a libel case... yeah, we know it already sounds a bit confusing. Add a lot of snow, some sex (not all of it of the good kind) and a cat into the mix and you may find your head spinning.

Parts of the film honestly made us feel like we were about to faint, so it’s not a good one for after a large meal, (let’s just say you’ll never hear Enya in the same light again after one particular scene), but we were gripped throughout by the thriller.

Daniel Craig performs well (and we love his pajama bottoms) but it’s Rooney Mara (previously known for a cameo as Mark Zuckerberg’s angry girlfriend in The Social Network) as Lisbeth who shines.

Despite some obvious “Hollywood” moments, this adaptation seems to have lived up to expectations and left Itchy, well, itching to see the next instalment.

Warning: Itchy seriously underestimated how late it would run and missed our last train home – 152 minutes is apparently quite a long time.
