Meet the twins

It's an odd idea, twinning towns; two places in completely different parts of the world with no apparent relation to one another are linked, supposedly with the goal of fostering better international relations and cultural understanding. Ok, but is the process of choosing a twin completely arbitrary, as it seems to be? Nottingham, for instance, has six twins (actually that would make the lot septuplets then, wouldn't it?).

But does Nottingham have anything in common with its international siblings, or is it the black sheep of the family? Itchy set out to do a little internet-based research on a few of these foreign relatives.

Ghent, Belgium: Nothing to do with Nottingham specifically, but Britain went there to sign the treaty that ended the War of 1812 with America, which we reckon makes it pretty important for Britons as a whole.

Harare, Zimbabwe: This was a surprisingly simple one, though again not specifically for Nottingham. It was formerly part of the British empire and known as Salisbury. It's also a trade centre for tobacco, which is always important to know.

Minsk, Belarus: Shopping. Nottingham is one of the biggest retail shopping areas in England, and Minsk is the birthplace of that king of high end clothing, Ralph Lauren (born Ralph Lifshitz, should you ever need the fact for a pub quiz).

Oh, in case you were wondering, Nottingham's other twins are Ningbo, China; Karlsruhe, Germany; and Ljubljana, Slovenia (we're not even going to try and pronounce that last one).
